Spider Porn!

Professor P.Z. Myers has a wonderful examination (with pictures!) of the mating rituals of spiders.

Another important and dangerous step is flagging down a willing female. Spiders often have elaborate courtship rituals, with fancy dancing, wig-wagging palps, and fragrant pheromones, all working to convince the female, who is a ferocious predator, that the male is friendly and conspecific and wouldn't she like a little wink-wink-nudge-nudge instead of or before eating him? I can sympathize. I remember when I first asked my wife-to-be out on a date in high school, and I was as nervous as if there were a worry that she might sink her fangs into my skull, inject my cranium with digestive enzymes, and slurp my brains out like a tasty oatmeal milkshake. With spiders, they might really do that.

It's like I'm actually learning something, albeit weird stuff.

Read comment #9 for that extra special scientific bonus fact.

Sin City

...is the first movie that I've really, really wanted to see in a long time. I saw the trailer at the Uptown before watching The Aviator. Absolutely breathtaking.

From JM McNab's description, I just want to see it more.

The stories are well thought out and often surprising, but it is the execution of the visuals that makes this movie truly remarkable. Shot on digital and made almost entirely in front of a green screen, Sin City is as stylized as the original artwork that inspired it. In fact, technology afforded Rodriguez such capacity to duplicate Miller's drawings that Miller received a co-director credit and became a collaborator.

The visual style of the graphic novels is clearly influenced by the film noir movement of the '40s and '50s. By reintroducing these images to cinema after having first been filtered through the artistry of Frank Miller's comic, Rodriguez achieves a dynamic effect - it's like a watching a film noir on mescaline. This movie is so expressionistic it makes Fritz Lang look like Jean Renoir.

Once this freaking appellate brief is completed, I'm so going to the movies.

I Love Women

This is not some sort of declaration that I'm not gay or bi, although I'm not (NTTAWWT). It's rather that I appreciate women as women, in all their many forms. They're beautiful and soft and kind and a whole lot of fun to be with.

Outer Life has an excellent paean to women that more eloquently expresses their beauty than I (Hat tip to Michael Gilleland).

I never understood the reductio ad absurdum that drove my fellow men to zero in on one body part. In doing so, they were not only ignoring many other appealing features, they were missing the big picture, the holistic melding into one glorious creation that is the wonder of the female form.

They were also too dismissive; a breast man may turn away from a woman with small breasts, never realizing how perfectly her breasts complement her small delicate frame. My approach opened my eyes to many more women, and, let’s face it, guys like me could not afford to narrow the field.

The body part men were frequently led astray, their infatuation with one body part blinding them to other issues. Consider again the breast man who, drawn to a slim woman with enormous fat-laden breasts, fails to appreciate that someday the rest of her body is likely to develop a similarly-high fat content. The irony, of course, is that once that happens her breasts will no longer stand out like they used to, thereby diminishing the attraction for our hapless breast man.

As Dino put it, "You can't love 'em all...but you can try." Here's to trying.

The Law of Monkey

David Wong's The Law of Monkey explains why people are the way they are.

Picture a monkey. A monkey dressed like a little pirate, if you wish. We'll call him Slappy.

Imagine you have Slappy as a pet. Imagine a personality for him. Maybe you and he have little pirate monkey adventures and maybe even join up to fight crime. You'd be sad if Slappy died, wouldn't you?

Now, imagine you get five more monkeys. Tito, Bubbles, Fluffy, Marcel and ShitTosser. Imagine personalities for each of them. Maybe one is aggressive, one is affectionate, one is distant and quiet. And so on. They're all your personal monkey friends.

Now imagine a hundred monkeys. Then a thousand.

I love this little gem:

As long as everybody gets their own bananas and shares with the few in their Monkeysphere, the system will thrive even though nobody is even trying to make the system thrive. This is perhaps how Ayn Rand would have put it, had she not been such a hateful bitch.

Learning to treat those outside the Monkeysphere with a level of respect and dignity that one would normally reserve for those inside is the key to human social development.

Mr. X

Truer words were never spoken

Our Criminal Law professor requires a short paper for the term in addition to the traditional end-of-semester exam. While he was answering questions about the paper, a fellow classmate asked whether the paper should be as extensively footnoted as a law review article (where there is typically a 1:1 ratio between text and footnotes).

The professor replied:
"Absolutely not. Law review is primarily designed to identify those future lawyers who are interested in slavery."

First the doll, now this. I love this class.

Win some, lose some

I played in one of the Party Poker multi-table freerolls last night for four freaking hours. Placed 30 out of 2299. Got knocked out through my own stupidity. Dealt QTd, flop came KJx, and I pushed all-in. Got beaten by AKo. Not good to get punchy late at night.

On the other hand, I won a $10/1 Pot-Limit SnG. The edited history is below.

Yours truly,

"Have fun, don't die"

Carrington Vanston, one of my favorite Canadians, has a sobering look at the "African Cliff."

Sex, being normal and natural and healthy and fun, is not something people will abstain from. It's not something people have ever abstained from. It's not something people will ever abstain from. And it's not something people should abstain from. Abstinence programs don't work in Alabama, and they don't work in Africa. Or to widen the field a bit and make that statement more accurate, abstinence programs don't work on Earth.

The danger of playing Let's Pretend We Don't Have Genitals when you live south of the Mason-Dixon line is small compared to the death toll it takes in less developed places without access to cheap and effective medical treatment.

AIDS and unprotected sex reduce the life expectancy of a population. Shockingly, abstinence education doesn't change that.

Yours truly,
Mr. X
